It seems like discrete components are getting harder to find every day. In a world where everything fits on the head of a pin, it’s easier than ever to produce multi-purpose, multi-function devices.

However, some still appreciate the quality and engineering that goes into a single-purpose piece of gear. Nestled in the worlds of broadcast, post-production, Podcasting and engineered recording lies the domain of high quality mic and instrument pre-amplifiers. Certain projects require a high quality preamp and there are times when it is desirable to have one as a separate component.

Studio1A recently tried out the coveted Avalon M5 mic preamp. I wanted a transparent, high quality preamp to try out a few studio microphones and Avalon stepped up to the plate. No stranger to high end audio, Avalon produces a number of different preamp and compressor combos. However; for this project, I wanted a transparent mono preamp. …A brick. The fact that the Avalon M5 has an oval shaped analog VU meter only sweetened the deal.
