Mika Mic Ark

The Mika mic arm, 17″ pole and MSS monitor arm

Mic booms haven’t changed much in the last 3 decades. We have seen springs replaced by spring steel tension inserts and even a ‘topless’ boom that allows for neat cable placement without soldering your own XLR connector.

Yellowtec, a German company, has really broken the mold with its revolutionary Mika mic arm and mounting platform. This is engineering at its finest. From the sleek extruded aluminum pole and arm to the modularity of the system, this is unlike any normal mic or monitor mount.

I recently installed the Mika pole MSS monitor mount and finally crowned it with the Mika mic arm. This system offers a modular solution that can be customized however you like. If drilling into your surface or table top is not an option, there is a unique c-clamp that doesn’t look like a c-clamp. If you can drill, a simple bushing allows you to mount a mic arm. If you want the monitor mounts, a single hole is drilled to hold a 17 or 33″ high extruded pole. On this pole, you can mount several different monitor combinations with VESA brackets. You can also set the mic arm on top for a complete audio/video solution.

The newest member of the Mika family includes a mic arm with ’signaling’ capability. This mic arm has a circular tally light to remind you the mic is ‘on-air.’ We’ll keep you posted on this when it arrives.

We’ll have several photos of this unique installation coming up, as well as a 2nd monitor mount to let my producer know what’s happening during recording.

All-in-all, these elegant solutions offer a way to maximize studio space and ergonomics while looking great.
