The mention of pro headset microphones prompted us to try out a pair. First, the AKG 171 and 271. Laura uses the condenser (HSC271) and I try the dynamic version (HSD171.)

I hadn’t used AKG cans before, so the first thing I noticed was just how comfortable they felt and that rich clean audio that make these a great pair of studio headphones.

The headset microphone concept is a bit strange for someone that’s been used to looking down the grill of a large caliber microphone for decades. After a few dry reads, Laura and I were ready to try them out “on-air.”

The Austrian engineering is top notch …nothing flimsy or cheap feeling here.

The condenser mic was considerably brighter with a hotter signal. Both mic booms allow either left or right sided use. If you push the boom straight above your head, the microphone mutes.

These are pro all the way and come with a fairly hefty price tag. However, keep in mind that the price includes an excellent pair of studio headphones.
