Mackie VLZ3 - 157

VLZ3

There is a lot of buzz about the new Mackie VLZ3.

The VLZ3 series is the classic Mackie analog mixer with some new tweaks. As you probably know, I am not fond of external power bricks. I am happy to report that the VLZ3 series uses a standard (IEC 320) cable for the built-in, multi-voltage power supply.

The “out-of-box” experience with the 1402 was a pleasant one. The nicely curved heavy-metal plate wraps protectively around the bottom and sides. This mixer has a heavy duty feel to it. The faders are a bit stiff, but that can be a good thing as they will break in nicely. The knobs and buttons are just what I expect from Mackie… solid.

How does it sound? There is probably, rightly so, speculation as to whether the new XDR (extended dynamic range) premium mic preamps are needed for Podcasting and encoding to MP3, especially since a vocal strip will bypass the extra sensitivity of the preamp stage. I’m betting that most people will like this mixer because of the durable construction, legendary Mackie quality and excellent fit and finish. The manual takes extra care to explain not only the operation, but extra details on connection, use and design.

The 2 aux sends, 3 quality EQ channels per fader, an alt 3-4 buss, solo, hi-z in/out are somewhat standard fare for a 14 channel mixer.

I look at the VLZ3 mixer as a “re-master” of the classic analog Mackie for ‘07. If you appreciate solid electronics and design along with ultra low-noise preamps, the VLZ3 stands out as an analog champion in a digital world.
