12.13AKG SolidTube - 145

The AKG SolidTube takes to the Studio1A test boom this morning. As I work with AKG mics, especially the SolidTube, I am struck by their heavy-duty construction. The SolidTube is large, with an extra thick body. The huge, brightly colored foam windscreen dwarfs the entire microphone. The custom spider/shock mount is constructed of (what looks to be) a high-impact polymer with oversized tightening knob. Included with the SolidTube is an aluminum carry case that holds the mic, shock mount, windscreen, power supply, audio and AC cables, keys and manuals.
The SolidTube encases a 12AX7 tube for amplification. The hefty matching power supply provides a 100Hz rolloff. The back of the power supply provides a ground lift switch that can stop annoying ground loop hum in its tracks. To handle 120/240VAC, you remove the fuse and rotate the holder.
How does it sound? Everything about the SolidTube, and AKG mics in general, is tight with articulation and a nice sounding granularity. In the race for “tube warmth,” sometimes the bottom-end gets muddied. The SolidTube won’t allow that to happen. This mic, as with the 4500B, was not overly sensitive for a large diaphram condenser.
I cannot think of a better name than “Solid”Tube for this microphone. From the oversized body to the rock-solid sound and hefty power supply, this microphone is heavy duty with a Solid sound.
