Cesium beam: Electrons give up energy when they drop down in their orbits and the beam which is generated when the atom is bombarded is split (depending on the direction of electron rotation). Basically that energy is pretty constant since the electrons spin at a fixed rate. Hits a plate, filtered then drives a quartz.
The latest: [they] are now doing things with other ions like the ones from Mercury. This will make the Cesium clock appear antiquated.
