Adventure Racing is a term given to competitions comprised of several rugged outdoor events occuring almost non-stop over a period of several days. Participants are usually organized in co-ed teams, though there are a growing number of races for individuals. It is considered one of the fastest growing sports in the U.S. and worldwide.
Although there is at present no set format to an Adventure Race, all races include orienteering, as participants are in the wilderness and must find their own way to each event site. Events typical in a race include hiking, trail running, climbing/rapelling, mountain biking, paddling, horseback riding, rafting and mountaineering.
The first official Adventure Race was “The Raid Gauloises”, held in New Zealand in 1989, and consisted of 400 miles of mountaineering, horseback riding, kayaking, canoeing and rafting over a two week period. The first U.S. race was the Eco Challenge, held in Utah in 1995.
